Othello

Work

By William Shakespeare

Synopsis

William Shakespeare's *Othello* is a tragic exploration of jealousy, love, betrayal, and racism. Set in Venice and later Cyprus, the play follows the story of Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and his wife Desdemona. Their love, though genuine, is manipulated and destroyed by Iago, Othello’s ensign. Envious of Cassio's promotion over him, and suspecting Othello of an affair with his own wife, Iago orchestrates a deceitful plot, planting seeds of doubt in Othello's mind about Desdemona's fidelity. He convinces Othello that Desdemona is unfaithful with Cassio, cunningly using a handkerchief, a gift from Othello to Desdemona, as false evidence. Overcome by jealousy and rage, Othello tragically spirals into madness, ultimately killing Desdemona. When the truth comes to light, Iago’s machinations are revealed, leading to his arrest. Stricken by guilt and grief, Othello takes his own life. The play is a profound examination of the destructive power of jealousy and the vulnerabilities of trust and reputation within human relationships.
